Terry Lynwood Elvington

Terry Lynwood Elvington, 85, passed away on September 29, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was born on July 27, 1940, the son of the late Horace and Winnie Elvington.

Terry graduated from Newport News High School in 1958. After high school, he proudly served in the U.S. Army. He eventually went on to be employed by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, where he retired.

Terry loved to hunt and fish, and loved going to the hunt club, until his medical conditions prevented him from doing so.

Up until the time of his death, he stayed in contact with his former Shipyard co-workers and his hunting buddies, whom he loved very much and who meant so much to him.

He loved Lil’s Restaurant. Prior to his illness, you could find him there, socializing with his friends.

He loved the Dallas Cowboys. No matter what the season brought, he remained a steadfast supporter.

Terry’s previous pastimes were watching his grandsons wrestle for years, and then they went to coach high school. He would sit for hours watching and cheering for the kids on the mat.

Terry is survived by his daughter, Sherry E. Thacker (Rob), and his son, David Elvington (April). He was a proud grandfather to his grandchildren, Kimberly Hunter (Brad), Michael Rutkowski (Ashley), Ronnie Thacker, Cody Elvington, and his great-grandchildren, Jayden, Hailey, Cameron, Aria, Christiana, Lilliana, Athena, Silas, Brett, Braylon, Jacob, and Gracie.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Samuel Jones, Riverside Vascular, Dr. Bakhtiani, Dr. Hartke, and Dr. Azizi.

A service will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, Virginia.

Terry will lie in state beginning at 10:15 a.m., and the service will follow.
