Shirlie Anne Anson

Shirlie Anne Anson, born in Charleston, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on October 4,
2025. She is survived by her beloved husband of 65 years, David Anson; daughters Susan
Anson and Stephanie Richardson; son-in-law Matt Richardson; and two cherished
granddaughters, Schuyler and Madeline.

Shirlie earned her B.A. in Early Childhood Education from Christopher Newport University and
her M.A. in Early Childhood Education from Old Dominion University. She dedicated her career
to early childhood education, retiring as the Director of Hidenwood Presbyterian Preschool.
Shirlie was past president of the Virginia Association of Early Childhood Education, served on
the Governor's Advisory Council on Early Childhood Education, and also taught at Christopher
Newport University, leaving a lasting impact on countless students and colleagues.

She met her husband, David, when they were both music majors at Morris Harvey College in
Charleston, W.Va., and they shared a lifelong musical partnership, performing together in
numerous orchestras and bands. Shirlie worked side-by-side with David in his work as a band
director, teaching and leading the color guard, traveling for competitions and trips, including a
European tour with the United States Collegiate Wind Band.

Shirlie loved traveling, coordinating trips with friends, and exploring the world with David,
particularly throughout Europe. After retirement, she discovered a passion for painting, filling
their home with her artwork and participating in local art shows. Shirlie was an active member of
the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO). She was a longtime member and Elder of
Denbigh United Presbyterian Church, where her faith sustained her through her final illness.
Above all, Shirlie was the heart of her family, a woman of faith, and a devoted friend. Her
warmth, generosity, and love of life touched everyone who knew her.

A celebration of life will be held at Denbigh United Presbyterian Church (302 Denbigh Blvd,
Newport News, VA 23602) on October 11, 2025 at 4:00 PM.
