Sandra Lyon Church, 79, passed away at home on Sunday, January 4, 2026, following a lengthy period of ill health. Born February 11, 1946, to the late Herbert H. and Elinor C. Lyon in Newport News, Virginia, she remained a lifelong resident of Newport News after graduating from Newport News High School in 1964, and retired from Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in 2001.
Sandra was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Larry Nathan Church, and her sister, Patricia R. Perry. She is survived by her stepsons, Steve N. Church (Marlo) and Jeffrey Church; step-grandchildren, Helena and Nathan Church; sisters, Kay L. Phillips and Cynthia A. Lyon; nieces Mischelle Proctor (Terry), Alisa Bowman (Danny), Barbara Silk, and Carter Lyon Maclennan (Ruairidh); nephew Joseph Phillips; and beloved pets Maggie and Lollipop.
Sandra will be deeply missed, and her legacy of love and kindness will live on among family and friends. Her impact will continue to shape the lives of those she touched.
The family will receive friends on Monday, January 12, at 1:00 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. The funeral service will take place at 2:00 p.m., followed by burial at Peninsula Memorial Park.
