Larry Francis Ashe, born on May 10, 1943, in Hampton, Virginia, passed away
peacefully at his home in Mathews, Virginia, on November 14, 2024, at the age of 81.
Larry remained steadfast in his values, always known for his kindness and playful spirit.
His gentle, loving, and caring nature was felt deeply by all who had the pleasure of
knowing him.
He leaves behind cherished memories to his beloved wife of 55 years Sharon ”Sherry”
Collier Ashe; three children, daughters Wendy Marshall (Jonathan), Chrisie Ashe
(Jason) and son Gregory Ashe and grandson Orion Ashe; two brothers Steve Ashe
(Connie) and Michael Ashe (Sheri) and sister-in-law Nancy Ashe; along with loved
nieces and nephews. Larry is preceded in death by his parents Kelly Zed and Cornelia
Ashe and brother William Kelly Ashe.
Growing up in Hampton, as one of four brothers, Larry’s childhood was filled with
adventures and stories of playful mischief. He began his career with a short stint at the
Shipyard before following his true calling in the fire service. Larry quickly became a
beloved Captain, earning respect and admiration from his fellow firefighters for his
dedication and leadership over the 32 years he gave to the department.
One day at the firehouse, Larry and a coworker found inspiration while watching Bob
Ross on TV. They decided to try their hands at painting and spent downtime at the
station experimenting with brushes and paint. This hobby grew into a passion, and Larry
went on to create numerous award-winning works of art, capturing local scenes, river
landscapes, and iconic workboats beloved by the community.
After retiring, Larry continued his involvement with the arts through the Mathews Art
League, where he served as Vice President and gallery manager for many years and
contributed generously as a volunteer. His art and his heart touched many, and his
legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him.
Larry is survived by his beloved family, cherished friends, and countless community
members whose lives he enriched. His memory will forever live on in his artwork and
the lasting impact of his kindness and service.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, November 19th from 1 – 2:00 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to charities Tunnel to Towers, Bay School
Community Arts Center-Afterschool Program or the charity of your choice to honor
Larry’s spirit of giving and his commitment to helping others in his community.
