John Samos, 102, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 13, 2025, after a brief illness, surrounded by all of his grandchildren. Born in New York City to Frank and Eftehia Samos, John graduated from Commerce High School, where he excelled in football, baseball, and track. In May 1943, with World War II underway, he volunteered for the Army Aviation Cadet program and graduated as a Flight Officer in August 1944. Assigned to a B-17 crew, he was sent to England that September. On his 11th mission over Hamburg in January 1945, his plane was struck by flak and enemy fighters. The crew crash-landed in Germany and spent four months as prisoners of war before release. Following his return, John was stationed at Langley Air Force Base. It was there, at a church fundraiser dance, that he met Agnes, the love of his life. They married soon after and shared 72 years together.
John’s military career spanned decades. He worked for NACA, the predecessor to NASA until 1949, when he was recalled to instruct during the Korean War. He later served with the Strategic Air Command in B-47s, earned a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Oklahoma State University, and became project engineer for the B-70 fuel system at Wright-Patterson AFB. In 1963, he returned to Langley AFB to lead the Air Force Systems Command Liaison Office, and from 1966 to 1990, he directed NASA’s Technology Utilization Office. He retired in 1999, after a distinguished career, receiving, among many, NASA’s Lifetime Achievement Award in Technology Transfer and a 45-year service award. His military honors included the Air Medal, Purple Heart with oak leaf cluster, POW Medal, and seven additional commendations.
In addition to his professional achievements, John was a devoted leader at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, serving as parish president for seven years. He played a key role in founding the Greek Festival at the original downtown Newport News location, and in securing the property for the church’s current home. He also faithfully managed the church’s bingo program for 25 years, creating a space for fellowship and support for the community. As a proud member of the Order of AHEPA, John championed education, philanthropy, and civic responsibility, holding leadership roles, including District 3 Lieutenant Governor (1974), Governor (1975), and a Supreme Governor (1978). He was honored as National AHEPAN of the year in 1977.
Above all, John was known for his boundless generosity and unwavering kindness. He was always ready to lend a hand to family, friends, and anyone in need–never once complaining, no matter the day. He found joy in boating, fishing, and family vacations. As the owner of the Warwick Restaurant, he welcomed many with warmth and hospitality. A passionate sports fan, he cheered on his beloved New York Giants and San Francisco Giants, and never passed up a trip to the casino, even at 100 years old. John’s legacy is one of service, faith, and deep devotion–to his family, his church, and his community.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Fluff N Puff Senior Care, and especially to Stephanie and Tina T., for their compassionate assistance and unwavering support. Their presence brought comfort and companionship during some of the most difficult times.
John was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Agnes Handges Samos, his daughter Effie Economou and his brother, George Samos. His memory will be eternal as he is survived by his son Harry Samos, granddaughter Lea Holbrook, and husband Jason, and their daughters Lauren and Sydney; granddaughter Christi Byrd and her two sons, Austin and Camden; grandson John Michael Samos and wife Melissa, and three children, Rylan, Caroline, and Emeline.
A viewing will be held at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 60 Traverse Road, Newport News, on Thursday, November 20th, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., followed by a Trisagion Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will take place at the church on Friday, November 21st, at 11:30 a.m., with a burial to follow at Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News. A reception (Makaria) will follow at Angelo’s, 755 J Clyde Morris Blvd, Newport News.
Arrangements are being handled by Peninsula Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church.
