James “Willy” Lassiter passed away unexpectedly on November 17, 2024, at home.
A lifelong resident of Newport News, Virginia, James was born on October 15, 1948, to Eunie and Ruth Lassiter. He served as a corporal in the United States Marine Corps and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He retired after working in finance at the City of Virginia Beach Fire Department for over 20 years.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Lassiter; father, Eunie Lassiter; mother, Ruth Lassiter; brothers, David Lassiter and Charles Lassiter; sister, Nancy Lassiter; and granddaughter, Kenya Courtway. He is survived by his son, James Lassiter, Jr. (Tennilla Gayl Lassiter); stepsons Adam Horrell (Joyce Horrell) and Jason Horrell (Heather Horrell); daughters, Ronda Courtway and Krista Abel; sister, Brenda White; grandchildren, Qua’Maine, Shanice, Ja’qua, Owen, Riley, Wyatt, Grayson, Emma, Holi, Hope, and Kaila; one great-grandchild, and countless nieces and nephews.
James wished to be cremated, but a service will be held at a later date.
James was a jokester, and all who knew him hope that he can finally find his chocolate-covered BBQ-flavored rooster egg!
