James Joseph O’Donnell (July 8, 1934 – October 3, 2024)

James Joseph O’Donnell of Newport News passed away quietly at home in the company of his wife of 63 years, Rita. Born in Brooklyn, NY, James was a long-time public servant who worked until he was 81 years old. His public service included service in the U.S. Army, New York Public Schools as a high school teacher for over 30 years at Commack High School in New York, and later he enjoyed a long career in law enforcement with the Northport NY Police Department, the Newport News Police Department, and finally, at the Newport News Sheriff’s Office.

James had a full life and was a dedicated family man. He was predeceased by his son, Sean, and his sister, Mary. He is survived by many friends, his loving wife, Rita, his son, Christopher and his wife, Jennifer, his daughter, Kerry, his daughter-in-law, Marie, two sisters and a brother, and five grandchildren: Liam; Katie, Morgan, Bridget, and Erin.
