Irving Marshall Francis passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at home in Newport News, Virginia, at the age of 94. He brought joy and laughter to many.
Marshall was born to Eugene and Ora Francis on December 29, 1930, in Gladys, Virginia, and was one of nine children. His parents, one brother, and seven sisters all preceded him in death. He is also preceded by his soul mate and devoted wife, Betty, and his beautiful daughter, Connie Kennedy. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Daryl Bloom, his son David Francis and companion, Vicky Jones, and son-in-law Walter Kennedy, Jr. He leaves to cherish his memory five grandchildren, Dillon and Derek Bloom, Landon Kennedy, Adam Kennedy and wife Sophie, and Lauren Francis, and one great-grandchild, Callum Kennedy. Numerous nieces and nephews will remember him fondly.
Marshall embodied hard work and humility. He was a milk route salesman for his entire career, and his children never had an issue with being labeled “the milkman’s kids.” He rode Harleys, loved cars, played a mean game of horseshoe, and could use duct tape to fix anything.
He and Betty bought their first home in 1958 in the Newmarket area of Newport News and never left. His neighbors were like family, and he blessed them with mowed lawns and clean cars in his retirement.
His family would like to thank his caregiver of 10 years, Mary Beth Caufield, for her devotion, care, and love. She was a constant source of love and laughter to him and could never be repaid for the attention she gave him. She is an official Francis now. Also, many thanks to Heartland Hospice and their wonderful team. Nicole was Marshall’s buddy, and her care was a blessing. His nurse, LaDonn, was kind and so helpful.
Marshall was a good man and an excellent role model. He loved his family unconditionally. All admired his warmth, generosity, and loyalty. He will be sorely missed, but his legacy of kindness and giving will be passed on. He is with his Lord and Savior and probably mowing someone’s cloud in Heaven right now. Carry on, Dad. We love you.
The family will receive friends and family on Sunday, November 2, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., at Peninsula Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held on Monday, November 3, at 3:00 p.m. at Peninsula Memorial Park.
