Fred W. Eaker, affectionately known as “Fred” and “Grandpop,” passed away peacefully on Monday, August 4, 2025, at the age of 94. He was a resident of Hampton for 58 years. He was born on March 16, 1931, in Bradford, Pennsylvania.
Fred was a Navy veteran who served active duty in the Korean War and the Cuban Missile Crisis. His service took him around the world. After he retired from the Navy, he worked and retired from the Sup Ship division of Newport News Shipbuilding of Virginia.
Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Jackie Eaker; his sons, Billy Eaker and Fred Eaker; and his sister, Gloria Eaker.
He is survived by his children: Mickey Thornburg of Annapolis, MD; Arthur “Albert” Eaker of Newport News, VA; and Roger Eaker (Terry) of Chesterfield, VA. He was a cherished grandfather to Fred Eaker, Jr. (J Dana) of Raleigh, NC; Ryan Eaker (Kira) of Chesterfield, VA; Bret Eaker of Newport News; A.J. Eaker (Dana) of Madison, NC; Daniel Eaker (Codie) of Hampton, VA; Jeremy Eaker (Jessi) of Fairfax, VA; Rachel Eaker (Alec) of Chesterfield, VA; Gayle of VA; Dorian of VA. He was also a cherished great-grandfather to many great-grandchildren.
A devoted member of the Hampton Moose Lodge #1514, Fred enjoyed sharing good meals with friends every evening. He had a lifelong love of dogs, poker, music, westerns, dancing, and treasured every visit with his family.
Fred will be fondly remembered for his sense of humor, strong work ethic, and deep love for his family and friends. His memory and legacy will live on in those who loved him.
Family and friends will gather at the gravesite at Peninsula Memorial Park on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held at Ryan and Kira’s home following the gathering at the cemetery.
