Bob was a wonderful and caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was born on October 16, 1935, in New York City and raised in Spring Valley, NY. He attended Alfred University and transferred to the University of Alabama, where he met the love of his life, Marilyn Lewitt. He graduated with a B.A. in History with a minor in Biology in 1957. He and Marilyn married on August 21, 1960, in Jacksonville, FL. Thereafter, they moved to Boston, Massachusetts, so that Bob could attend the Massachusetts School of Optometry. He graduated from optometry school in 1961. He volunteered for the Medical Corp of the U.S. Air Force and served on active duty from 1961-1964, stationed at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, Illinois. Bob made sure that the pilots sent to Vietnam had the best eye care possible. After completing his active-duty obligation in 1964, Bob and Marilyn moved to Newport News, VA – halfway between Bob’s parents in New York and Marilyn’s parents in Georgia. Bob served in the Air Force reserves at Langley Air Force Base from 1964-1968, when he was honorably discharged. Bob and Marilyn raised their family in the Denbigh section of Newport News.
Bob was an outstanding optometrist and practiced for just shy of 50 years. He had thousands of patients and often ran into former patients who expressed their gratitude to “Doc Noc” for the excellent eye care he provided and his great sense of humor.
Bob’s greatest accomplishment was his family. He loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and was immensely proud of them all. He and Marilyn particularly loved spending time at their beach house in the Outer Banks and were thrilled when their family joined them there. Additionally, Bob was an avid racquetball player and could often be found at the Riverside Wellness Center on Tuesday and Thursday evenings playing racquetball.
Bob and Marilyn were devoted members of the Rodef Sholom Temple. For the past several years, Bob enjoyed the company of his dear friend Linda Roesen. The family is very grateful to the numerous caretakers from Visiting Angels who took such amazing care of Bob, particularly Katrina, Susan, Veris, Minnie, Jewel, Nunicia, Michele, Crystal, and Talina.
Donations in memory of Bob Nochimson may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association – Southeastern Virginia Chapter.
Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, February 25th at the Jewish Cemetery of the Virginia Peninsula located at 1817 Kecoughtan Road in Hampton, VA.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I have fond memories of Bob and Marilyn at family parties. They were both very kind and loving.
Dr. Nochimson was my optometrist from the time I started wearing glasses at age 12 until he retired during the pandemic – nearly 50 years. He was always caring and thoughtful and never rushed an examination.
When he told me he was retiring, he joked “what better year for an optometrist to retire than 20/20!” 😂
My sincere condolences to his family.
And thank you, Dr. Nochimson, for providing the best doctor/patient relationship of my lifetime.
You will always hold a special place in my heart.
Rest in peace.
I had been one of Doc’s patients for many years. Going back to when he had his private practice in Denbigh. He was always upbeat, positive, funny and would take all the time needed to make my visit personal. He remembered my family and some of the things that had taken place over the years. I really missed him when he retired and only wish he had had more time with those he loved.
My “Bobby Boy” I always would joke around saying that… Mr. Nochimson I will miss you my buddy I have such great memories with you from our walks our talks to eating lunch together! I will truly miss that sense of humor you had and you also
Knew how to clean up nice! 😊
Love you always ! Crystal

Robert Nochimson was a wonderful optometrist that I actually first met in the medical practice that I manage. He and I spent many wonderful days together learning the new electronic medical record system that we used and I assisted him every day that he worked to finish his charting for his patients. It is during those times that we shared family stories and talked about trips and places that we had visited in our lives. He always would tell me how much he loved his family and especially his wife Marilyn. He was always so funny when he spoke about Marilyn being his southern sweetheart and would speak in a soft southern accent at those times. He shared many times about his youth and growing up and had many funny stories about his teachers and classmates. I found his friendship to be a true blessing in my life. My practice adored him as did his many patients. I know that as others learn of his passing, they will have wonderful memories and kind words of expression regarding him. To me, these are the treasured memories that I will hold onto when I think of him over the coming days and months. I feel I lost a valued friend and will miss him dearly. I hope that his family will find comfort in knowing that so many others will be missing him too, but remembering him so fondly. My deepest condolences to his family at this time.
For over 20 years Dr N was our eye doctor. My son Mike and I really enjoyed our visits as not only did we discuss our vision but always managed to talk baseball, spring training and the Yankees which took a little longer. Loved the Reggie Jackson picture in the office. So sorry to hear of his passing but know that he will be missed. Thoughts and prayers with the family. Kren Pond
