Donald Winn Gammon, of Newport News, unexpectedly passed away on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at the age of 72. Born on September 6, 1953, Don lived in several states over the course of his life before returning to his hometown of Newport News. A 1972 graduate of Homer L. Ferguson High School, he pursued a career in retail sales working predominantly for major automobile dealerships and clothing retailers, from whom he was awarded several Salesman Awards. During his life, Don enjoyed a natural talent for many athletic activities, such as water skiing, ice skating, diving, and golf, but fishing was the one he most enjoyed. He was very interested in military history, focusing predominantly on the WWI and WWII eras.
Preceded in death by his parents, James Carlton and Jean Winn Gammon, he is survived by his brother James C. Gammon, Jr. (Jo Ann), sister Vicky A. Gammon, two nieces, Carey Gammon Pierce and Leslie Gammon Rogers, great-nephew Jackson T. Pierce, and great-niece Skyler G. Rogers.
Don enjoyed life and lived it on his own terms. He was loved and will be greatly missed.
A graveside memorial service for family and friends will be held at Peninsula Memorial Park, 12750 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, Virginia on Wednesday, October 8, at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Don’s memory be made to the Peninsula SPCA Animal Shelter, 523 J.
