Cora B. LaPrade

A remarkable life came to a peaceful end with the passing of Cora B. LaPrade in Newport News on April 2, 2026, at the age of 101.
Born in Southwest Virginia, Cora moved to Newport News as a young woman to accept a job with the Department of War at the Port of Embarkation. It was here that she met her cherished husband, Garnett S. LaPrade. They enjoyed 64 years together until his death in 2009.

A dedicated civil servant, Cora retired from NASA in 1980 after 37 years of federal service. Her career was an important part of her life, as was her faith. Cora was very proud that she and Garnett were among the founders of Hilton Christian Church. The last surviving charter member, Cora served in many roles and attended as able until her passing.

Cora is survived by her devoted daughter, Nancy L. Munnikhuysen and her husband, Howard Munnikhuysen; sister-in-law Betty L. Romero; niece Mary Kayaselcuk and her friend Clyde Cocke; niece Susan Millington and her husband, Greg Millington; niece Brenda Grizzle; and nephew Garnett Taylor and his wife, Anita Taylor.

The family is grateful for the loving care of Dayana Louis, Jasmine Norfleet, Jasmine Morris, Constance Paige, Jerrica Williams, Manisa Jones, Brenda Kelley, Beth Shinn and the staff of The Huntington.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 24, at 1:00 p.m. at Peninsula Memorial Park with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Hilton Christian Church Memorial Fund, 100 James River Drive, Newport News, VA, 23601 or a charity of your choice are suggested.

Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
