Constance April Hedgepeth Kornegay died Tuesday, March 4, 2026, at Lindside Healthcare Center in Lindside, West Virginia. Born September 17, 1927, in Halifax County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of Kate O’Sullivan Bledsoe Hedgepeth and John Stewart Hedgepeth, having moved to Newport News, Virginia when she was a young child.
She was a member of Northside Christian Church in Yorktown, Virginia. She had a beautiful voice and loved singing in the church choir. After the death of her husband and son she enjoyed volunteering in the church office.
She was retired from Maida Development Company in Hampton, Virginia.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Winfred A. “Fred” Kornegay; a son, Jerry A. Kornegay and wife Rita; and three brothers, Roland Hedgepeth and wife Ann; Vance Hedgepeth and wife Mae; and Donald Hedgepeth.
She is survived by her son, Terry Allen Kornegay and wife Nancy, of Peterstown, West Virginia, with whom she had made her home for the past 10 years. Additionally, she is survived by grandson, Donovan A. Kornegay and granddaughter, Terry Anne Kornegay, both of South Carolina, as well as numerous great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was well-loved and will be greatly missed by her many friends and family in both West Virginia and Virginia.
A visitation will be at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 10 at Peninsula Funeral Home in Newport News, Virginia, services will follow at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in Peninsula Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Northside Christian Church, 1300 George Washington Memorial Hwy, Yorktown, VA 23693.
