Catherine “Kit” Lewis passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2025, with her daughters by her side. Born on September 22, 1937 in Hampton, she was a Peninsula resident for almost all of her 87 years. For over 50 years, she was an active member of St Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Hidenwood.
Kit graduated from Old Dominion in 1968, with a degree in secondary education-social studies. She began her career as an educator at Tucker-Capps Elementary in Hampton, followed by a career in Newport News at Carver High School, Carver Intermediate, and Menchville High School. Following her retirement, she worked in admissions at Riverside Regional Medical Center for 10 years. She was also a fixture at Busch Gardens Festhaus for over 25 years and played on the co-ed softball team well into her sixties.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Bernard and Ann Coe, her brother Jonathan M. Coe, sister Ann “Nancy” Christiansen, sister-in-law, Ann Coe Inman, brother-in-law Robert “Bobby” Lewis, and ex-husband and life-long friend, Richard “Dick” Lewis.
Left to cherish her memory are her three daughters, Debbie Russell (Richard Brown), Stephanie Guy (Ed) and Mary Lewis (Ryan Roehrman); her grandchildren, Trey Guy (Candace), Chris Guy (Kelsey), Alec Russell, Lauren Russell (Peter Miller), and Zach Lewis; great-grandchildren, Madi Grace, Quaide, Charlotte, Caerwyn, Adaline, Elsie and Kate Guy, and Whit Miller; sister, Phoebe Grylls; sister in law, Barbara Lewis; brother-in-law Grover (Elizabeth) and her many nieces and nephews.
A remembrance service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 8th at Trinity United Methodist Church, 201 Cedar Street, Smithfield. Following the service, the family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall.
Kit’s daughters express their deepest gratitude to the caregivers and staff at Churchland House for the love and kindness shown to our mother and each of us.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or your favorite charity.
