Amelia McGinnis Arthur

Amelia McGinnis Arthur of Yorktown, 86, joined her Heavenly Father on Monday, April 21, 2025.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, James H. Arthur, Jr., her parents, Harold and Ruth McGinnis, and a brother, Harold McGinnis Jr. (Monty). She is survived by two daughters, Ruth Anselmo (Troy) of Sutherland and Mary Pincus (Joseph) of Gloucester; seven grandchildren, Donna, Celia (Clint), Nicholas, Monica (Tom), James (Lauren), Melinda and Nathan; two great-grandchildren, Henry and Ben, with two more arriving soon; and a sister, Nancy Jessen of Mt. Holly, NC.

Amelia graduated from Mt. Holly High School (NC) in 1956 and the University of North Carolina—Greensboro in 1960. As a girl, she was active in the First Presbyterian Church Choir and youth groups in Mt. Holly, NC. Amelia was a member of Northampton Presbyterian Church in Hampton for 40 years. In later years, she was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Yorktown.

She loved reading and studying the Bible. Amelia often expressed her joy and thankfulness for her family—God’s wonderful blessing. She loved spoiling her grandchildren. She loved music and was always thrilled to hear her granddaughters play the piano and violin. She was amazed at her grandchildren’s accomplishments and thankful that each one had grown into a fine person. Amelia was blessed with wonderful friends and loved spending time with them.

Amelia spent her last year at Sanders Assisted Living in Gloucester. Her family would like to thank all the loving caregivers and friends she made there.

A memorial service will be held at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 300 Ella Taylor Road, Yorktown, on Thursday, April 24 at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to St. Luke’s UMC Food Closet or the General Fund.
