Our beloved, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Jonna M. Young, 84 years old, with her family by her side, was called to her heavenly home on Wednesday, August 10, 2022.She will be lovingly remembered by her children: Raymie Young (Crystal) and Karina Arntz (Butch); grandchildren: J.D. Arntz (Joni), April Eller (Shane), Heather Marrs (Mike), Shannon; greatgrandchildren: Dylan, Alyissa, Brenten (Siobhan), Summer (Aaron), Shane Jr. (Lacie), Ashley (Lee), Brinklee, Logan, Austin, Angel, Anthony; great great-grandchildren: Garrett Blake, Haven Grace; sister Margrethe Olesgaard (Peder); as well as nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 59 years, Buford D. Young; brother, Ivan Malthe Madsen; parents: Henrik Malthe Madsen and Anne Margrethe Christensen; and granddaughter, Rhonda Jacuzzi.
Jonna was born and raised in Aarhus, Denmark. After graduating from Folkeskole, she attended and completed a 3 year apprentice to become a professional seamstress. After marrying the love of her life, she traveled as an Army wife and mom, making her way to the states and settling in Hidenwood, Newport News, VA in 1970. Although she loved to sew, bowl, socialize with friends and tend to her flowers, she spent much of her life caring for and helping raise 4 generations of children. Her heart had no boundaries, whether you were born in the family, married into the family or friends of the family, she loved everyone the same. Her life revolved around caring for her family. She will be remembered by many for her waffles, crepes, danish cheese toast, hummingbird cakes, cold cuts, Risalamande at Christmas, bedtime stories, trips to the sand pool, weekly trips to Bush Gardens or Water County, long walks through the neighborhood, hosting events, flowers, sewing, among many other things. She took pride in raising her children, helping raise her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Even in her final days of life, she enjoyed and found comfort in her great great-grandson climbing in her lap for her to read him a story or play a game with him. With her loving arms, warm lap, hardworking hands and pure heart, she was and will always be the foundation of the family.
A visitation service will be held from 2p-4p on Sunday, August 21, 2022, at Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd, Newport News. A private funeral service will be held at 3pm on Monday, August 22, 2022, at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. Memorial Donations may be made in Jonna M. Young’s name to Wounded Warriors and St. Jude’s Hospital.
