William Locke “Buck” Rogers, 80, of Newport News, Virginia played his final hand on December 29, 2020.  Buck was born on Labor Day, September 2, 1940, in Evanston, Illinois, thus beginning a lifetime love of bad jokes and bad puns.
An accountant by training, Buck spent his free time “roughing” it in rural Illinois with the Chicago area Boy Scouts. Buck received the Vigil Honor, the highest award given by the Boy Scouts National Honor Society, the Order of the Arrow. He also received the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service from his local Boy Scout council.

After 47 years of grueling winters and coincidentally a job transfer, Buck moved from Chicago to Virginia.

Buck finished his work career in Virginia with the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters Thrift Stores. After retiring, he dedicated the bulk of his time to two new-found passions: bridge and coin collecting. He also continued his participation in Boy Scouts, but after 39 years, he realized that sleeping on the ground isn’t actually that much fun.

Buck regularly played six days a week and could almost always be found at the Peninsula Duplicate Bridge Club in Newport News. Due to his dedication and willingness to drive for hours to find a good game, Buck achieved a Sapphire Life Master ranking from the American Contract Bridge League. Without the curse of COVID, Buck probably would have achieved a Diamond Life Master ranking, but fell 42 points short of his goal. When not counting his cards, Buck was busy counting his coins. His extensive coin collection ranges over denominations, centuries, and countries. This Christmas, he received the last coin needed to complete his collection of Morgan dollars.

Buck is survived by his wife, Ann Marie Wyatt-Rogers; and four children: William Locke Rogers, Jr., Stephen Mitchell Rogers, Andrew Wyatt, and Megan Ann Player; and a sister, Katherine Buckles.   Additionally, he leaves behind seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and numerous in-laws, extended family, and friends.
