William E. “Bill” Layton, 93, of Hampton, passed peacefully from this world on Wednesday, May 15, 2024. He was born September 28, 1930, and lived in Newport News, Virginia, for most of his life. Bill attended Newport News High School, where he was voted “Most Popular Boy ” of the 1949 graduating class. He was in the Glee and Hi-Y social clubs and was awarded a varsity letter for track and low hurdles. Bill briefly ran track for the College of William and Mary before joining the Air Force to serve in the Korean War. While stationed in England, he met the love of his life, Elsie Hyde. They were married for 62 years. Bill worked for the civil service for over 35 years. He was an avid stamp collector and a die-hard Washington Redskins fan.

Bill is survived by two daughters, Sandra Hooper (Rick) and Cathy Layton, and two grandsons, Stephen Addison Goddard and William Andrew Goddard.

A private service was held on May 17, 2024.
