Lucy Cherry Ambrose, 97, of Newport News, Virginia, died Friday, January 15, 2021.  She was born December 3, 1923, in Washington, North Carolina and was a long-time resident of Portsmouth, Virginia, before moving to Newport News in 2000.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard E. Ambrose, her parents, Samuel B. and Myrten W. Cherry and her brothers, Samuel Dallas Cherry and Charlie W. Cherry.  She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Ambrose Hatten (Frank Moore), her son, Bill Ambrose (Anne), and her only grandson, Christopher Hilton, all of Newport News, and her sisters-in-law, Ollie H. Cherry of Clemmons, North Carolina, Geri Ambrose of Washington, North Carolina and June Cherry of Miami, Florida.  She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Lucy graduated from Washington High School, Washington, North Carolina in 1942 and married her high school sweetheart in 1945.   She and Richard spent almost 60 years together until his death in 2005.  She was a homemaker for many years before joining her husband as his office manager, accountant and customer service clerk in his television repair business, A&T Television Company in Portsmouth, Virginia, retiring in 1988.

Lucy was all about family.  She could recite birthdates of any family member from memory well into her 90’s.  She was gentle and kind and loved all her family unconditionally.   She was extremely proud of her grandson, Chris, and was known to talk on the phone for hours with her nieces.  She loved receiving cards in the mail and was showered with cards by her niece, Kathy, almost every day for many years.

The family wishes to thank the staff and nurses at The Gardens at Warwick Forest, Chesapeake Unit in Newport News, where Lucy lived for the last two years of her life.  We especially thank Tameka and Aundrea, whose care and affection for Miss Lucy will always be remembered.

A graveside service conducted by Rev. Michael Condrey will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at Peninsula Memorial Park.  In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to make remembrance contributions are asked to send them to First Presbyterian Church, 514 S. Armistead Avenue, Hampton, VA 23669 or to a favorite charity.
