Loray Callis “Raye” Gwyn
Loray Callis “Raye” Gwyn, 92, of Newport News, VA, passed away on March 19, 2024. She was born on August 7, 1931, in Gloucester County, VA, to the late Roland Clinton Callis and Pearle Loray Callis. Raye graduated from Botetourt High School and, after graduation, moved to Newport News, where she worked and attended the College of Hampton Roads, studying business and secretarial courses for a year.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Patric H. “Harty” Gwyn, and daughter, Lori Ann Gwyn.
Raye is survived by her daughter Mary G. Jackson (Mike Kroner) of Newport News; three grandsons, Christopher Jackson (Anastasia), Patrick Jackson (Maria), and Clinton Jackson (Heather); eight great-grandchildren, Kyle, Marc, Abigail, Evan, Caroline, Ben, Sophia, and Sydney; along with her sister, Jane Byrd (Elliott).
She retired from the accounting department of the Public Health Service in Newport News. Raye was a member of Hidenwood Presbyterian Church for 55 years and later joined St. Stephens Episcopal Church. She was blessed to have served as a Deacon and an Elder in the church and Stephen’s Minister. Raye was an assistant Girl Scout leader for eight years and a member of various associations, including PEO, PTA, and Bridge Groups. After retirement, she was a member of three golf associations: Hampton Women’s Golf Association, where she served as President; Warwick Lady’s Golf Association; and Deer Run Women’s Golf Group. She loved the game of golf!

A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 5, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. The visitation will occur at Peninsula Funeral Home on April 4, 2024, from 6:30-7:30 p.m., 11144 Warwick Blvd. Newport News, VA 23601.

I know Aunt Loray, mom, aunt Fran, Granny Nuttall and all of her family members that have already passed will be there to greet her as she enters heavens gates. All my love, Marie’s ,Debbie.
