Leila Barclay Shepeard Hine

Leila Barclay Shepeard Hine died Thursday, November 10, 2022.

Leila was born January 11, 1925, to Maude Mickleboro and John Thomas Barclay, now deceased. She was the widow of George Roy Shepeard III and James Francis Hine.

Leila’s daughter, Susan Shepeard Castelli, died November 15, 2021. Leila is survived by her son, George Roy Shepeard III; her grandchildren, Lauren Barclay Castelli, William Connor Castelli (Katie), and Nicholas Allan Shepeard; and her great-grandson, Jack Shepeard Castelli.

Survivors also include her nieces and nephews: Jane Denton Waters (Bill); Jeanette Denton Leslie (Lawrence); Joanne Denton; Betty Jean Batkins Vanderploeg (Sam); Helen Howard Haley (Warren); Franklin Batkins (Robin); David Batkins (Tammy); and their families. She was pre-deceased by her sisters and their husbands: Jean Barclay Denton (Jimmy); Sarah Barclay Howard (Ward); Anne Barclay Batkins (Carlton); and Louise Barclay; as well as her nephew Carl Batkins.

Leila was an honor graduate of Morrison High School (now Warwick High School). She earned a two-year Secretarial Diploma from Mary Washington College (now the University of Mary Washington), and in 1946, she graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.

An active communicant of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Leila served on the staff for many years as Parish Secretary and Rector’s Secretary. She also formerly served on the Altar Guild and the Vestry, and she was a Stephen Minister.

Leila enjoyed participating in the activities at The Chesapeake Retirement Community, where she lived and served at one time on the Resident Council. The weekly duplicate bridge games and the monthly book club meetings were two of her favorite activities there.

Other than her strong faith in God, the most important love of her life was her family – especially her children and grandchildren.

A memorial service will be celebrated at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 45 Main Street, Newport News, VA, 23601, on Friday, November 25 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her honor to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, or to your favorite charity.
