Kimberly Miller Young

Kimberly Miller Young, age 54, of Newport News, Virginia passed away peacefully March 31, 2021 due to diabetic complications, surrounded by her loving husband and many of her dearest friends.

Kim was born January 10, 1967 in Charleroi, PA.   She attended St. Jerome’s Catholic school and went on to Mon-Valley Catholic High School, where she graduated in 1990.  Upon high school graduation Kim immediately enrolled in the nursing program at Carlow College in Pittsburgh where she graduated in 1990 with her Bachelor’s Degrees in Nursing and Phycology.

Kim’s passion had always been nursing ever since she was a young volunteer at the Mon-Valley Hospital just outside Pittsburgh.   Her joy was always to be able to help and care for others.

Upon college graduation, Kim relocated to Newport News, VA and began her nursing career at Riverside Regional Medical Center as a Registered Nurse. She spent many years within the Riverside Health System where she went on to advance into Nurse Management.  Later Kim attained certification as CRRN (Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse) and transitioned into Rehabilitation nursing where she became the Director of Nursing of a Rehabilitation and Long Term Care Facility.   Most recently Kim worked for Genex Health Services as a Medical Case Manager coordinating care for workman’s compensation injuries.

Dan and Kim began dating when she was 16 and were married in 1996, celebrating 25 beautiful years together.  Kim said multiple times she was so lucky to have found her soulmate in life. She loved spending time on their boat cruising from marina to marina for waterside dinners. She enjoyed chatting to everyone she ever met and, with her sparkling personality, made lifelong friends along the way and everywhere she went.

Kim’s hobby were her dogs.  She loved her two Samoyeds, Nikko and Tally, and became an accomplished amateur handler earning their AKC Championships.  She enjoyed showing her dogs and traveling the regional AKC Dog Show Circuit.  Kim along with her husband and two dogs were also very active in the local community.   She enjoyed participating in a variety of fundraisers for community events as well as those benefiting various local pet related organizations. (Peninsula SPCA, Peninsula Pet Pantry, Therapy Dog International, Animal Aid Society, Virginia Peninsula Food Bank, Toys for Tots). She was also always up for any dog show shenanigans as long as it made everyone laugh and always volunteered her time no matter what was asked of her.

Kim is a member of the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses, Langley Kennel Club, Virginia Beach Kennel Club as well as the Samoyed Club of America.

No matter what was going on in Kim’s life she only cared about what was going on with her loved ones and that is what meant more to her than any struggle she ever had. She had the biggest heart and her own set of angel wings with a smile for everyone, even a stranger. No matter where she went or how she felt that day, she gave you her heart and only wanted your happiness back.

Kim is survived by her devoted husband Daniel Young of Newport News; her loving sister, Gina Miller of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida; and tons of friends she touched throughout her short time here on earth.

A Celebration of Kim’s life is currently being planned.  In lieu of flowers, Dan requests any donations be made to the American Diabetes Association www.diabetes.org.

Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601.
