June Elizabeth Gilbert (DeHart)

1939 – 2024 (85)

She was born the oldest child of Lambert & Felsie (Davis) DeHart in Swain County, NC, near the end of the Great Depression.  As a child, she moved to Hampton, VA, with her family so her father could work at the Newport News Shipyard.  June was a proud graduate of Hampton High School class of 1958.

Her father introduced her to Jerry Gilbert. They fell in love and married in October 1963. They raised their family in Hampton, where June was a homemaker. She was a member of what is now Liberty Live Church, where she served in the nursery for decades. She enjoyed reading, painting, gardening, crafts, crossword puzzles, and spending time with her family.

After a lengthy illness on August 2nd, June went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, her husband Jerry Gilbert, parents Lambert & Felsie & brothers Boyd & Gwen DeHart.  Left to cherish her memory are her son Gregory Gilbert, daughter Edith Gilbert, and grandchildren Mandy Whitby (Mike), Cody Gilbert (Macy) & Hunter Hartman (Lillie).  Great grandchildren Summer Whitby, Dominic Whitby & Makenzie Gilbert.  Brother Clifford DeHart (Marilyn) & sister Agnes Dale.  In-laws Roy L. Gilbert (Louise) & Chad Gilbert, along with a host of nieces, nephews & cousins.

The family would like to give extra special thanks to Lisa Marshall, who was integral in allowing June (and Jerry) to be cared for at home. Her loving care and attentiveness to the entire family were a godsend! Thanks also to the hospice staff who helped us care for our Mama in her final days.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Liberty Live Church at Liberty Live. Church/give, the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association, or your favorite charity.

Visitation begins at 12:30 on Thursday, August 8, 2024, and a funeral service will start at 2 p.m. at Liberty Live Church, 1021 Big Bethel Road, Hampton, VA 23666.  A graveside service will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park, 12750 Warwick Blvd Newport News, VA 23606.  Officiated by Rev Joe Hunt.  The funeral service will be streamed at LibertyLive.church/livestream.
