Joyce Duke Lewis

Joyce Duke Lewis, 100, passed away on Saturday, October 21, 2023. She was born in Warrenton, N.C., and was a Peninsula resident most of her life. Joyce was devoted to her family and was steadfast in her faith. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church for 65 years. Joyce had a love for boating, playing canasta, and birding. She helped the Audubon Society catch and band various birds. Joyce worked at The Mariner’s Museum for 30 years and enjoyed walking the James River to catch soft shell crabs! She also loved the fried oysters at one of her favorite restaurants, the Crab Shack, and the “Warwicktonian” at Danny’s Deli!

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Walker T. Lewis; her parents, Mark and Beaufort Duke; her brother, Harold Duke; her sister, Margaret Muller; and her son, Robert Lewis.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Mike Baraba; a granddaughter and her husband, Jessica and Adam Link; three wonderful nieces; and the best for last, one great-grandson, Daxton Link!

A funeral service will be held at Peninsula Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at 4:00 p.m.

    Joyce was a gem of a person. She always had a kind word for everyone and was the most patient individual I have ever known. It was my honor to work with her for 10 years at The Mariners Museum. She enriched the world we all live in. I will cherish her memory always.
