John Wayne Shemenski

John Wayne Shemenski, 84, passed away and into the light of the Lord on July 25, 2024, at Riverside Hospital, Newport News, Virginia. He was a lifelong resident of Newport News. John was born November 5, 1939, in Newport News. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank J. Sr. and Bettie C. Shemenski, of Newport News. He is survived by his brother Frank James Shemenski, wife Diana of Derwood, Maryland, and Newport News, and numerous cousins in Virginia, Maryland, and Florida.

John was always active: he played little league baseball, was a cub scout, boy scout, explorer, and later a member of the Civil Air Patrol – all in Newport News. John graduated from Warwick High School in 1958 and Old Dominion College in 1966 with degrees in applied science and electronic engineering. He was employed at Newport News Shipbuilding before and after attending college. He later served in the United States Army Signal Corps and served in Germany. After returning to Newport News, he was employed by General Electric Portsmouth, Virginia.

At his home in Newport News John enjoyed working on automobiles, electronic design and repair projects, and anything technical. John, Father, and Brother enjoyed the many years together maintaining and harvesting fruit from the family orchard. Into his 70’s and 80’s John enjoyed cycling, building model airplanes, and traveling. He was a member of the Grissom Library and spent much time there.

Funeral arrangements were conducted by Peninsula Funeral Home and a graveside service was held August 6, 2024 at the Peninsula Memorial Park.
