George Mattox, Jr.
George M. Mattox, Jr., 94, a lifelong resident of Newport News, left this earth for his heavenly home on June 13, 2021. He was born in South Carolina and served honorably in the U.S. Army. George retired as manager of a Big Star grocery store. He was an avid fisherman and loved his Mustangs, so much so that his red 2006 GT Mustang will lead the procession from the funeral home to the cemetery on Thursday.
George is preceded in death by his first wife, Evelyne Mattox; his wife, Josephine “Jo” Mattox; daughter, Patricia Winfree; and eight siblings. He is survived by his daughter, Dot Cash (Gene); son, Raymond Mattox (Cheryl); eight grandchildren, Teresa (Joedy), Jennifer, Adam (Helen), Noelle (Michael), Natalie (Aaron), Nicollette (Andrew), Angie (Paul), and Sherri (Tony); eighteen great-grandchildren, Seth, Caleb, Mallory, Lindsay, Wyatt, Emily, Colson, Izzie, Beau, Isla, Barrett, Tessa, Cooper, Madeline, Nolan, Graceyn, Scarlet, Maddox, and one on the way; and his girlfriend of seven years, Dianne and her family.
A visitation will be held from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at Peninsula Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 17, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park.
The family suggests contributions may be made in George’s memory to Parkview Baptist Church or Westhampton Baptist Church.

Always a gentleman with a big smile and something nice to say. David danced before the Lord. Perhaps they’ll be a spot for George to dance as well…. Rest In Peace
