Edwin Francis Harrison, 89, of The Chesapeake Retirement Community in Newport News, died September 7, 2024.

Ed was born near New Bern, NC, on December 20, 1934, to the late Edwin Dortch and Alice Sawyer Harrison. 

He was married to his late wife of 64 years, Sue Robinson Harrison, and is survived by his son, Douglas Edwin Harrison, and his grandson, Henry Croswell Harrison, both of Baltimore, MD. 

Ed grew up on a farm near Goldsboro, NC, and graduated from Pikesville High School as salutatorian of his class. After earning a degree in mathematics from East Carolina University in 1957, Ed began a 38-year career as a researcher at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), now known as NASA. 

During his career, he was regularly recognized for his scientific and leadership contributions in the areas of aerodynamics, astrodynamics, meteorology, and climate change. He authored or co-authored over 80 scientific journal articles and technical reports and retired as Head of the Radiation Sciences branch. 

Ed lent his talents to support local organizations, including the First United Methodist Church in Hilton, Orcutt Baptist Church in Newport News, and Boy Scout Troop #13 in Hampton. He will be remembered as a kind and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. 

A memorial service followed by a reception will be held on Friday, September 13, at 10:00 a.m. at The Chesapeake Retirement Community, 955 Harpersville Road, Newport News.
