Mrs. Amelia Gaines Britt, 93, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 27, 2023, at Southampton Medical Center in Franklin, VA. 

She was born in Greenville County, SC, the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Gaines and Floride Peden Gaines. She met her husband Charles M. Britt in Columbia, SC after attending college and working at the state hospital. 

A resident of Newport News since 1950, she retired from Civil Service after 20 years of service. Then lived in Franklin, VA for two years.

Mrs. Britt was a member of Denbigh Presbyterian Church and a past member of Temple Baptist Church. She was active in church circles and The Prime Timers, the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter #43, the Woman’s Club of NN, and garden clubs.

She particularly enjoyed painting, sewing, gardening, music, boating, and water skiing.

Predeceased by her husband, parents, and seven siblings, she is survived by her two children, Ms. A. L. Britt of Atlanta, and her son-in-law John H. Chase. Jr., Mr. Martin Britt of Courtland, VA, grandchildren Mason Britt and Nicole Britt Oakley, great-granddaughter Savannah Britt and many loving nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at Peninsula Funeral Home, before the funeral service at 12:00 p.m. with the Rev. Deborah Dail officiating. Interment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
