Adam E. (Bucky) Lenhart, Jr.
Adam E. (Bucky) Lenhart, Jr., 85, of Newport News, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 6, 2024, after several years of declining health. The son of the late Adam Elmo and Bernice Francis Holland Lenhart. Bucky was a lifelong resident of Newport News. Not surprising to any family or friends, he decided to exit on what would have been his parents’ 88th Wedding anniversary! Guess he thought it was time to pay them a visit.
After 65 years of Marriage, Bucky is survived by the love of his life, Mary, and their two children Andrew (Wayne Hobbs) of Saint Albans, VT, and Rob (Andrea Casey) of Mechanicsville, VA, Bucky’s Sister Joan Lenhart Burgett (Donald), Four grandchildren, Casey, Shane, Jude, and Darcy, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
Bucky graduated from Newport News High School and continued his education through Bankers College while working for Citizens and Marine Bank, now Truist Bank. Bucky stayed with the bank through all the growth and changes and transitions for over 40 years.
During the early years of marriage and work at the bank, Bucky was drafted into the military. He served his country in the Army during the Cuban missile crisis and the Vietnam War from 1962 -1965, remaining in the reserves for many years after discharge. When he returned home, he went back to work for the bank, picking up where he left off.
After retirement, Bucky would be found walking the trails at Mariners Museum, writing poetry and short stories. He also enjoyed meeting close friends and former colleagues for coffee and lunch on Dog Street in The Burg.
The family would first and foremost like to give special thanks to family friend Ruth Owens King and niece Sandra Deans Snyder, who gave untold time, excellent care, and support prior to his moving to Hospice care. The family holds in high regard the entire staff at Northampton Nursing and Rehab, as well as the entire staff at VA Hospice, for the excellent care and attention they all provided.
There will be a private family burial. At Bucky’s request, there will be no funeral services.
In Lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the charity of your choice, If you need a recommendation, the family suggests the Alzheimer’s and Dementia foundation, or the Peninsula Rescue Mission.
Arrangements are in the care of Peninsula Funeral Home.

Mary, you and your family are in my prayers. I love you.
Dearest Mary, Robert, Andrew and family….So sorry to hear of Bucky’s passing, so glad I got to visit him last month…50 years of great memories. I hope you feel the hugs…I love you all. Norb sends his regards as well. Will be in touch soon.
Mary, holding you and your family close in heart and prayer.
Bucky was one of the most genuine people I have ever known. A rock, you could always depend on him for guidance, support, a smile, an uplifting conversation, and the truth. He was a great judge of character. Still waters run quiet and deep. He was one of the first people I met in 1971 when I joined the family at UVB. He was my first boss and he made what seemed a somewhat challenging world to me, a fun and learning experience. What a team! I learned so much. Well my heart goes out to his family and the circle of friends who loved him. Prayers for peace and comfort. He will forever be missed.
