Michael C. Olsen, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on Monday, August 10, 2026, at the age of 84.
Michael was born on October 4, 1941, in Rumford, Maine, where he spent his early years surrounded by family, friends, and the community that would always remain close to his heart.
Michael proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1960 to 1963, attaining the rank of Airman First Class (E-4). During his years of service, he was deployed to Turkey before being stationed at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia. Following his military service, Michael remained in the Newport News area, where he met the love of his life, Mary “Gerrie” Olsen.
Michael and Gerrie were married on October 2, 1965, a date that gave Michael so much joy as he said she was the best birthday present he could ever ask for. Soon after, they purchased a home in Newport News, and that home became a place where Michael would spend the next six decades building a life filled with love, friendship, laughter, and community. Together, Michael and Gerrie raised two daughters, Kristen and Kathy.
Michael had a lifelong passion for sports, particularly skiing, golf, and racquetball. He was an accomplished and enthusiastic player who loved both the competition and the camaraderie that came along with them. Whether on the golf course or racquetball court, in the snow, or simply spending time with friends, Michael had a way of bringing people together.
He was a friend to many and deeply involved in his community. Over the years, Michael formed countless friendships and touched the lives of many people. He will be remembered not only for his competitive spirit and love of sports, but for his humor, loyalty, and the genuine friendships he cultivated throughout his life.
Michael was preceded in death by his mother, father, brother, and beloved wife of 50 years.
He is survived by his brother Craig Olsen (wife Kathy), daughter Kristen Gulla (husband David), daughter Kathy Olsen (partner Kimmy), granddaughter Amber Gulla, and many more beloved friends and relatives.
