Joan Medlin

It is with hearts full of gratitude for a life beautifully lived that we announce the passing of Joan Medlin of Newport News, Virginia, who departed peacefully on the evening of Thursday, May 7, 2026, at the age of 90, surrounded by family.  A source of wisdom and strength, she valued her independence and creativity.  She loved the Lord.  Raised in Poquoson by parents Mabel and Hartness Insley, Joan was a woman of extraordinary grace, simplicity, and quiet dignity.  She dedicated her life to cultivating warmth and love, creating a sanctuary for her family and bringing light to all who knew her.  Joan was a devoted mother, grandmother, spouse, sister, and friend to many.  She found joy in laughter, crocheting, making pot holders, sharing a meal with loved ones, and tending to her flowers.  Her home was always welcoming with a hug and a place to sit.

She is survived by her loving children, Donna Medlin, Lorrie Firman (Nate), and Donnie Medlin; nine grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; and her brother Sonny Insley.  Also, a wide circle of friends who were family, Thomas White, Lynn Crawfford, and many others.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Henry D. Medlin; her cherished son, Gordon D. Medlin; her parents (Mabel and Hartness Insley); her two sisters, Geraldine and Judith; and her two brothers, Buddy and Gregg.

Joan Medlin leaves behind a legacy of unconditional love and quiet resilience that will live on through her children and grandchildren.
