Mary Lee Davis, 76, of Newport News, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2026, surrounded by her family.
She was born on April 3, 1950, in Pittsburgh to Mary Louise and Charles McClellan.
Mary was, above all else, a deeply kind and present soul. She had a quiet way of making people feel seen, valued, and loved. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, she lived her life with a simple but powerful purpose: to love her family and friends well and to enjoy the moments she was given. She never wanted the good times to end, and in many ways, she made sure they didn’t.
Her love for her children and grandchildren was constant and unmistakable. Every phone call began with her signature asking about their latest interest – a reflection of her genuine delight in the lives of those she loved. And calls ended, without fail, with “I love you.” Her happiness was found in their happiness.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Donald Davis; her sister, Charlotte Jennings; her children, Brandon Davis (Megan) and Kim Elenez (Jerome); and her treasured grandchildren, Jack Davis, Marley Davis, Camille Thornton Elenez, and Ben Elenez.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Louise and Charles McClellan; her brother, Richard McClellan; and many dear family members and friends.
Mary’s greatest joy was simply being together, whether at the family’s beloved Mathews property, or in the homes of her children or friends. She loved Christmas, the beach, a good glass of Chardonnay, sunshine, laughter, and time spent with friends. She rarely sought attention for herself; instead, she focused on others, always wanting to know how they were and hoping they were happy, all while sharing her gentle wit and way of making ordinary moments feel lighter.
Even in her final moments, this never changed. As her husband, son, and daughter sat beside her, she asked them if they were happy, a reflection of a life spent caring more about others than herself.
As she grew older, Mary deepened her connection to her faith, finding comfort and peace in the promise of Heaven. She loved her parents and departed friends deeply, and her family finds solace in knowing she is reunited with them.
Mary lived with a quiet confidence and grace. She may not have sought out thrills, but she moved through life unafraid, grounded in her faith, secure in who she was, and deeply anchored by the extraordinary partnership she shared with her husband. Their love was steady, enduring, and a beautiful example to all who knew them.
