It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Michael F. Cavelli, Jr., who passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on November 23, 1936, Michael lived a full and meaningful life.
Michael was a man of extraordinary intellect and dedication, which he showcased during his distinguished career at NASA. His contributions to various projects were a testament to his commitment to excellence and innovation. He was a proud member of the Newport News community, leaving behind a legacy that is felt not only through his professional achievements but also through the love and admiration of his family and friends.
Michael’s family was his greatest joy. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean Cavelli, whose love and support were cornerstones of his life, and by his cherished grandson, Michael Cavelli. He leaves behind two devoted sons, David (Brenda) and Steven, who continue to honor his memory. Michael was also a proud grandfather to Joey, Zack, Lindsay, and Kristyn, and a doting great-grandfather to Dakota, Dezaire, Devin, and Alli. His family’s love and the legacy he built will carry on through them.
A man of faith, Michael was an active member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, where he found solace, community, and strength. His spiritual life was important to him, and he cherished the connections he made through his church.
Beyond his professional and community engagements, Michael had a passion for college football, fervently supporting the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. His spirited cheers and unwavering loyalty to the team were a beloved aspect of his personality; he was a true fan who shared his enthusiasm with everyone around him.
Michael’s funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at 11:30 AM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. Friends and family are invited to gather to celebrate his life, reflect on his many contributions, and share memories that bring comfort and connection.
