Ebert W. Landman

1st Sgt. (U.S. Army Retired) Ebert W. Landman went to be with his Lord on Friday, September 12, 2025, at home, surrounded by his family. Bert was born in Filmore County, MN, and moved with his family to Burlington, NC when he was 14 years old. In 1955, he moved to Virginia to work at Newport News Shipbuilding. After serving in the Korean War, Bert returned to Virginia, where he met the love of his life, Margaret Elizabeth James, known to her friends and family as Bettye. He resumed working at the shipyard and then for SupShips, the Department of the Navy. He also continued to serve his country as a reservist/weekend warrior for 30-plus years. Bert has called Yorktown home for the past 21 years.

Bert exhibited all the qualities of a true Virginian: honest, patriotic, and loyal. He was a man centered on family first. Whether you knew him as 1st Sgt., Ebert, Bert, Papa, Daddy, or cherished Poppy, he is now at peace.

Bert was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bettye, parents, Cornelius and Johanna Landman, his only sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Ken Huffines, niece, Sandy Bryant, and his sister-in-law, Jackie White. He leaves behind his son and son-in-law, Bert Landman Jr. and Lawrence Besel Jr.; his daughter and son-in-law, Julie Landman-Humes and Creig Humes; three adoring grandchildren, Elizabeth “Elle” Louise Lowery and husband Ricky Lowery, Jr., Donald William “Will” Humes and Christopher James Humes; niece Beverly Litton of Graham, NC; great-nieces Kimberly Rich and Juliana Mullins of Durham NC; and his only nephew Max and his wife, Pam Ward.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 111 Church Street, Yorktown, VA 23690. The service will be followed by a reception in the parish hall.
