George Milton Summerfield, 89, of Surry went to be with our Heavenly Father on Sunday, January 12, 2025.

He was born on December 30, 1935 in Cunard, West Virginia to the late Seth Summerfield Jr. and Beulah Summerfield. The son of a coal miner, George pursued an education first at ODU and later at Virginia Tech. This led him to a wonderful 36-year long career at NASA.

“Lonesome George”, as he was known by many, was an accomplished hunter, trapper, fisherman and gardener. George was captivated by our natural world and all the plants and animals within it. Many of the friendships he forged over his lifetime were in the woods and on the water.

George held his faith in the highest regard. While living in York County, he served as a Deacon for Grafton Baptist Church and once moving to Surry, George taught Sunday School at Bacons Castle Baptist Church where he remained a member until his passing. He always attributed the blessings in his life and his success to that of the Lord.

Preceding him in death, his parents, his brothers, David and Dallas; and his sisters, Joanna and Doris.

George is survived by his first love and only girlfriend, Patricia Rogers Summerfield; brother, Bob (Jeanne); sons, Wayne Summerfield (Jan) and Steve Summerfield (Juanita); his grandchildren, Jack Summerfield, Jenna Holmes (Aaron), and Chloe Butler(Jude); and his great-grandchildren, Elsie, Hudson, Tallulah, and Salish.
