Sherry Lynn Akers

Sherry Lynn Akers, 71, passed away on December 30, 2024.

A lifelong resident of Newport News, Sherry was born on March 31, 1953. She graduated from Warwick High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Christopher Newport University.

Sherry had a wonderful and unique sense of humor that made her friends and family laugh and put her patients at ease. She was an avid reader, a doll collector, and a die-hard Washington Commanders fan. Sherry’s favorite place was the beach, especially the Outer Banks, where she loved seeing pelicans, dolphins, and wild horses.

Sherry began her nursing career in the labor and delivery department at Riverside Hospital, and she then worked as a registered nurse at the Riverside Surgery Center at Warwick. In the years before her retirement, Sherry handled pre-operative phone calls for patients undergoing inpatient and outpatient surgery at Riverside.

Sherry was blessed to have the love and support of her close friends Debbie Brown and Karen Schrader. She is survived by her cousin Janie Haskins and her aunt Carol Akers. Sherry was preceded in death by her parents, Betty T. Lamb and Benjamin G. Akers, and her grandparents Verner and Marjorie Truitt.

Visitation with family and friends will be Tuesday January 7th from 6-7 pm at Peninsula Funeral Home. A graveside funeral service will be held Wednesday January 8 at 11 am at Peninsula Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Corolla Wild Horse Fund.
