Gregory Warren Raines
Gregory Warren Raines, 75, passed away on Friday, August 16, 2024. He was a loving and devoted son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. Those who remain to cherish his memory are his wife of 49 years, Blythe; son, Logan; daughters Abigail (Travers) and Madeline (David); sister, Janet; brother-in-law, Craig Galow; and grandsons, Myles and Levi.
Greg was born on April 22, 1949, to Lewis & Hazel Raines. A lifelong Newport News, VA resident, Greg graduated from Ferguson High School, class of 1967. He was a member of the First Decaders of Christopher Newport College, where he earned his B.S. in psychology in 1972. Greg was employed by the 7th Judicial Court Service Unit in Newport News for 46 years. He valued the friendship of his coworkers, always sharing his kind, sincere, and gentle manner with all. He was a member and elder of Hilton Presbyterian Church. Greg’s Christian way of living was admired by many. His devotion to family, friends, and church was primary in his daily life. Greg’s thrills were to drive his ‘67 Corvette convertible, sing along to Roy Orbison songs on the radio, water-ski behind his StarCraft boat, and attend air shows, always looking to the sky.
A special thank you to the nurses and doctors of TPMG of Thimble Shoals Family Medicine, the caregivers at Elite, Elder Care, and the nurses and doctors of the Select Specialty Hospital of Newport News.
A celebration of life will be held at Peninsula Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, September 14, at 11 a.m. The Graveside service will be private. In lieu of flowers, please live your life as Greg did: with a selfless, compassionate, and generous heart.

My Sympathy & Love. Greg was a very Special Cousin.
GREG WAS A BELOVED AND SPECIAL FIRST COUSIN. MY SYMPATHY & CONDOLENCE TO FAMILY & FRIENDS.
I worked with Greg for many years at the 7th District CSU in Newport News. He was the kindest person, just a gentle soul, and always willing to offer help when needed. My condolences to his family and prayers for God’s peace and comfort to you all.
Greg obtained the pinnacle in life: that is, loved by his savior, Jesus Christ, and being a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Prayers to Blythe and the family. He will be missed.
My deepest condolences to Blythe and the family. Greg was a special person with a good heart. I was blessed to work with him for almost 40 years. He fought a good fight and has now reaped his reward. I pray God will comfort and strengthen all of you during this difficult time.
My sincere sympathy to all who loved Greg. He was a kind, gentle and caring man who demonstrated his compassion to help others every day. I worked with him at court services and am so saddened to learn of his passing.
To Blythe and the Raines family, this world has truly lost a gem in Greg Raines. Sending my deepest condolences to the family and praying GOD’s comforting love to you all in the coming days, weeks and years. I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Greg at the NN Court Service Intake Unit. We may have differed in politics, dress style, and office automation; but we shared the same values of family, compassion for the youth we served and love of country. Raines was my friend and I was made the richer for knowing him. Deepest Sympathy to the family from Renee (LQ) Copeland and family.
