Margie Marie Hess
Margie Marie Hess, 96, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2024, at her daughter’s home in Carrollton. She was born on April 14, 1928, in Swords Creek, VA., to the late Eugenia and Palmer Joe Elswick.
Margie is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Garland Hess; daughter, Linda Burton; two brothers, Jake and Claude Elswick; and her younger sister, Nancy Gregory.
She was an active member of Parkview Baptist Church until her health declined, and she could not attend. Margie loved coupon shopping, cooking, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She met her future husband, Garland, in September 1945. Two months after their meeting, they were married on November 14, 1945.
Margie graduated from Honaker High School and received her teaching certificate from Radford University. She taught school, and later, the family moved to Newport News, where she began her career at Newport News Shipbuilding in 1952. Margie retired from the yard in 1990.
Marie is survived by two daughters, Judy Hodges (Jim) and Sandra VanPelt (Stan); her wonderful grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Christine Duncan, Cynthia Epps, Amanda Body, Jenna Combs, Amy Denton, Jason Burton, Megan, Alysia (Thomas), Michelle (Matthew), Stanley, Savannah, Brody, Emma, Brooke, Abigail, Zoe’, Kyrie and McKenzie; plus a host of family and friends.
The family will receive friends at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, with the funeral service following at 2:00 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. The interment will be private.
The family especially wants to thank Mom’s Riverside Hospice care team for their help and compassion. A special thank you to Debbie Boyd, RN, and Dr. McConaughy for their outstanding care, support, and kindness. Our family all pulled together to care for Mom, especially with Savannah, Christine, and Megan’s help, loving care, and dedication.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Parkview Baptist Church or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Sorry for your loss. I worked with Margie at the Shipyard in the data entry department. Margie was so kind
I love and respected aunt marie as a person and a Christian especially her faith. If a Christian were to go to court they should have a enough evidence to found guilty she did she was what all Christians should be
Judy, I am so sorry for the loss of your mother and will keep you and your family lifted in prayer.
Marie and her sister Nancy were my father Jake Elswick’s sisters. Unfortunately I never met them until Jake’s funeral in 1990. Marie and Nancy embraced me and even flew out to Colorado to visit me. Since I was an only child and had by then lost my Mother((Helen Arms) I was thrilled to find Aunts I never knew I had. They made me feel like an Elswick. I met their kids, my cousins and formed lasting family ties. Marie was very loving to me and I will always cherish that. She will be missed. RIP Aunt Marie you are loved.
Our prayers are with you Sandra and the family in the loss of your mom. I know she will be missed. God will see you through this trying time but just have trust in him always.
