Melvin Lyle Renn
Melvin Lyle Renn, 81, passed away at his home in Newport News, Virginia on June 16, 2024.
Mel was born in Portsmouth Naval hospital and was raised in Newport News, Virginia. His education included graduating from Warwick High School and
Old Dominion College (ODU). His early career was in the Hampton School system where he coached athletics and taught driver’s education. He subsequently went to work for the ILA where he retired in 2001. Mel was well known for his athletic abilities. He played high school and college baseball and continued to play fastpitch softball until he was in his 50’s. He was also an avid golfer and played for many years while spending winters in Florida and at Kiln Creek golf club.
Melvin is survived by his wife Marsha L. Renn of 23 years; sons Melvin Renn, Jr., Bubba Renn (wife Teresa); stepsons, Steve Linkous, Sean Linkous; sister Janet Biege and brother-in-law Rich Biege; granddaughters, Kayla Renn Filipak (husband Andrew), Shelby Renn; grandsons Jared Renn, Patrick Linkous; great granddaughter, Avery Filipak; and nephew Louis Bain.
A special thanks goes out to the numerous caregivers and Heartland Hospice that gave Mel such good care throughout his illness for the last 2 years.
A memorial service will be held in his honor at 11 a.m., on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at Peninsula Funeral Home,11144 Warwick Blvd, Newport News. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the American Heart Association, https://www.heart.org/.

Melvin and I were cousins; to me, he was my big brother. In my early years in Little League Baseball, he would work with me on all the fundamentals. I watched him play baseball and fast-pitch softball for quite some years. Melvin was a power hitter and an amazing infielder. We would go fishing in the reservoir near their home on Saunders Rd. In the winter we would occasionally venture out on the ice. Our parents were always best of friends. Wonderful memories of great times. Much Love Always.

My sincere condolences to the Renn Family on the loss of Melvin.
Melvin and I were high school friends at Warwick High School, class of 1961, and played on the Varsity Baseball team. Melvin was the captain of the team and we all looked up to him as the best 3rd baseman around. We also played American Legion Post 255 Baseball at Deer Park, Newport News; and again, as no surprise, Melvin was the best and strongest player and 3rd baseman in the league. I certainly admired him for his talent and leadership.
I always enjoyed, and will miss, seeing him at the Warwick High school reunions and yearly Christmas parties.
