Jerry W. Hulin
Jerry W. Hulin, 85, passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2024. He was born and raised in Montgomery County, N.C., in the community of Love Joy. He is preceded in death by his parents, the late Theodore and Ruby Hulin; a brother, Bill Hulin; and Sylvia “Bunny” Kinlock, whom he loved very much.
Jerry was a born athlete, excelling in both football and baseball in high school. He was an outstanding pitcher for the American Legion and was well-known for his talent throughout the league.
Jerry moved to Newport News from Troy, N.C., in 1957. He attended & graduated from the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School in April 1961. While there, he was recognized as a monogram recipient from the Apprentice School Athletic Association.
Jerry retired in 2003 after 42 years of dedicated service to Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Company (Huntington Ingalls).
He is survived by his stepdaughter, Lori Leib (Rick), stepson, Nick Collina (Emily), niece, Jan Hulin, and nephew, Todd Hulin. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Lynsey Leib (Ben Preston) and Tyler Leib (Lia).
Growing up on the farm in Troy, N.C., Jerry loved all animals, especially his dogs. He was a very proud owner of Tiki, Roxie and lastly, sweet Ruby. Known to spoil them quite often, he always brought home his restaurant leftovers for them. He loved a good steak, and they did too!
Jerry loved his birds, always making sure that his multiple feeders were full. He was happiest in his backyard with his birds and his garden. Jerry took much pride in his garden and loved sharing the fruits of his labor, especially tomatoes.
He will be missed by many and remembered for his kindness, his wit, and his generosity.

There will be a visitation at Peninsula Funeral Home from 5 PM to 7 PM on Thursday, May 9. A memorial service will be held at 12PM on Friday at Peninsula Funeral Home, followed by a graveside service at 1 PM in Peninsula Memorial Park.

Jerry was a first cousin, a close friend, and a classmate in school. We have gone to many of his baseball games and watched him pitch. He was great. We haven’t seen Jerry in several years, but we kept in contact by phone at least once a month. He was always concerned about our health and who was sick or had passed away in the class. He would mention his dog and his garden especially his tomatoes which he was very proud of. He never complained about his health except to say it was something he had to live with. We will miss him because he was a part of our lives for many years.
Jerry was such a wonderful friend and a great neighbor to my kids. He looked out for them and many times before they could even take their trash out, he had already done so.
He had every tool in his garage, so when we were fixing something, we knew just where to go.
Even though he didn’t drink coffee, we often shared laughs as I enjoyed mine.
He was a such a lover of animals and on our family’s last trip to Jamaica, Jerry dog sat for us even though Ruby was a bit jealous.
There was never a holiday, cook-out, graduation or just eating that we didn’t share a dinner plate with him and he was so grateful!!!!!
You really had to know him to know what a kind and sweet spirit he really was. It was nice having him in our lives and he will be so so missed.
Jerry was a great friend and neighbor to our family. Often times on trash day, he would take their trash out before they did and when there were
projects to do, we always knew that we could borrow tools from Jerry’s garage.
Yess, Jerry was an animal lover, on our last family trip, he kept our dog, even though Ruby was a little jealous.
There was never a holiday, graduation or cookout that we didn’t share dinner with him and he was so grateful.
A sweet, kind spirit, It was wonderful having him in our lives and he will be so so missed.
Jerry was a great family friend. When my husbands father got sick Jerry stuck by his side, continued to take him out to lunches and checked on him often. Jerry shared lots of holidays and birthdays with us all as well as cookouts and other celebrations. He always made us laugh and could brighten any room with his smile. Jerry also made sure to share his garden fresh tomatoes with us every summer. He had such a huge heart and loved life. We will miss his energy and spark in our lives,but will always remember the great times spent with him.
