James Nimmo Hubbard III (Coach)
It is with great sadness the Hubbard family brings news of the coach’s passing on December 22, 2023, in his home in Newport News with his family by his side. He was born in Somerville, MA, on May 9, 1934, and educated at The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA. Coach taught physical education and coached track and field at Warwick High School, and he was later instrumental in the creation and development of the athletic program at Christopher Newport University. Coach will be fondly remembered by family, student-athletes, coaches, friends, Red Sox fans, and sports enthusiasts alike.
Memorial service arrangements are currently underway to honor his life.

Jim was a main structure builder in my life while attending CNC. He loved his athletes and students and always took time to council and listen when I needed advice. He and I spent many hours in his old station wagon traveling to track meets, or back and forth to Va Tech meeting with Va. Higher Education Board when they were questioning CNC’s need for degree programs. During road trips we would always need to attempt to listen to long distance AM radio broadcast of Red Sox or Bruins games…no music. I am truly saddened that I did.not stay in contact with Coach but did often think of him and life lessons he expressed to me and my teammates. RIP Coach and enjoy the golf in Heaven!
I worked for Coach Hubbard in the Athletic Office at CNC. He was a wonderful influence for my college years. He knew how to guide and shape young lives to prepare them for the future; and he also knew how to have fun while teaching us. I was just talking about him last week with some fond memories. If there’s a patch of green grass in Heaven I know he’s getting a putting green ready.
I had the unique privilege of being in Coach Hubbard’s PE classes at Warwick High in the 60’s and PE Classes at Christopher Newport College in the 70’s. He was one of the best! May he rest in peace!!
Coach was a part of my family’s life for many years. He and my mom worked together at
Warwick HS, and then years later he became a yearly fixture and important part our yearly Derby Day parties. He always brought some of his smile, a good joke or two, spring roses from his garden, and a six-pack of Miller Lite, never caring for our mint juleps or “fancy beers”.
I will his presence this year and we will be sure to toast Coach on Derby Day for a life well lived.
It was a pleasure knowing “Coach” for many years. Coach Hubbard and I were summer next-door neighbors in Kill Devil Hills, NC and had shared memories (and refreshments) of the many fellow coach-educators friends on the peninsula. A wonderful neighbor and friend I will miss!
It was indeed a pleasure being a “summer time neighbor” of Coach Hubbard in Kill Devil Hills, NC for twenty years. As a N.C. neighbor and fellow coach on the Peninsula, we had wonderful times (and refreshments) discussing both Virginia politics and the growing success of the Phoebus Phantom football program under the innovative Bill Dee. God Bless you my good friend.
Good bye coach. I’ll remember all of the golf we played and having you as both coach and friend.
Coach would say, “Hit’em down the middle”. Coach and the boys at the golf course had some great times. RIP on the practice putting green in heaven.
Coach. You will be sadly missed and I thank you for all of the support and direction you gave me while I was a student and one of your golfer’s at Christopher Newport. You were consistently a huge mentor and I will never forget the many road trips that you and our team spent together. You helped carve my career and your memories will never be forgotten. RIP!
