Jean G. Barger
Jean G. Barger passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, December 2, 2023, with her primary caregiver and son, Stephen, with her. Jean was 78 years old. Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Gerald Frank Barger, and her parents, Merritt Garner and Alda Garner Gildner. Jean is survived by her sons Michael Barger and wife, Laura and Stephen Barger.
Jean worked for Christopher Newport University as an acquisitions supervisor in the library for 45 years before retiring in 2011. She was a former Noland Memorial United Methodist Church member before transferring her membership to Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church, where she remained a member until her passing. Jean was a genuine friend to many. She loved to travel, especially on cruises, with her husband,
Visitation will be Thursday, December 7, 2023, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm at Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Boulevard, Newport News, VA 23601.
The funeral service will be Friday, December 8, 2023, at 2:00 pm at Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church, 1024 Harpersville Road, Newport News, VA 23601, followed by a graveside service at Peninsula Memorial Park, 12750 Warwick Boulevard, Newport News, VA 23601.

So sorry for your loss. I send my deepest condolences and prayers to the family. We grew up together in North End, attend elementary and high school together. I have some wonderful memories of our time together. May God give her family peace.
Jean was a good travel companion. Had many laughs and fun with her especially when visiting Hawaii many years ago. My deepest condolences and sympathy to the family.
Will never forget when my son, Joe, who as a young child, locked all of the bathroom doors in her house and each one had to be unlocked by taking off the hinges. Jean took it all calmly.
Thanks for the memories and may the family memories keep everyone strong and comforted.
