Richard “Rick, Ricky” Robinson Shelton
Richard “Rick, Ricky” Robinson Shelton, 54, of Gloucester, Virginia, passed away on November 14, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.
Rick was born on February 2, 1969, in Newport News, Virginia. He grew up in York County and graduated from Tabb High School. Rick also lived in Windsor, Virginia, and most recently in Gloucester. In his professional life, Rick worked as a nuclear supervisor at Newport News Shipbuilding.
Ricky was thoughtful and ready to extend a helping hand to those in need. He had a gift for fixing things rather than discarding them and hated to see anything go to waste. Even as his health declined in the hospital, he asked for a “box” for the leftover food from his tray. Whether it was hunting, fishing, cooking game and seafood, or simply sitting by the fire, Ricky found joy in the simplicity and beauty of nature. From an early age, he greatly loved animals (even snakes and lizards) and left behind his dearly loved close companion, “Peanut,” his Jack Russell Terrier.
Ricky was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Edith Lane Robinson, whose memory he cherished. He is survived by his father, Richard R. Shelton, and his sisters Sheila “Renee” (Barry) Smith and Robin (Bill) Teller, and his longtime companion, Sharon Singleton. His niece, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends also mourn his loss.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Riverside Hospital, especially those in the SICU unit, for the wonderful care and family support during Ricky’s time there.
To honor Ricky’s wishes, a private gathering will celebrate his life, allowing his family to pay their respects in a more intimate setting. Peninsula Funeral Home, located in Newport News, Virginia, assists the family with the arrangements.

Man Rick, the times we had, you, Dennis and I. I remember the first time you went skiing with us. You were fearless, no zig zagging for you, just straight down the mountain and fast as can be. 🙂 Or those late nights we would all go to Super K-Mart and get crab clusters and lobster tails. I’m so sad to hear of your passing. Our condolences to Sharon and the family. May you rest in peace.
