Johnny Ray Bates, 65, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 31, 2023, in Newport News, Va. He was born on March 16, 1958, in Hampton, VA. Upon graduating from Bethel High School in 1976, he worked at Newport News Shipbuilding. Then, he went to work at LockHeed Martin in California and as a Senior Machinist at Eagle Technologies, LLC in Newport News, Virginia, where he retired after many years of service.

Johnny was a devout Christian and a member of Temple Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, target shooting, and outdoor grilling. Johnny loved his family, dogs (Mundo and Buddy), and nature.

His father, Marvin, and niece, Jennifer, preceded him in death.

Johnny is survived by his wife, Linda; mother, Claudette Bates; brother Melvin (Judy); sister Claudine (A.G.); Aunt Josette Loviner; and two daughters, Jami and Kelsie.

A memorial service will be held at Peninsula Funeral Home on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at 2:00 P.M with Pastor Wes Taylor officiating.
