Mae Harris Hoffman

Mae Harris Hoffman, wife of the late Edward Lee Hoffman, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2023, at the age of 98.  She is survived by her only daughter, Barbara H. Zirkle (Warren) of Richmond, Virginia; two grandchildren, MacKenzie Harkins Seale (Ben) of Dallas, Texas, Chandler Harrison Harkins (Kelsey) of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; and a great-grandson, Hayes Allen Harkins.  She also leaves behind three sisters: Mary (Harris) Harris, Mabel Harris Parsons Crawley, and Sue Harris Andrews.  Two brothers, Bert Harris, and Olen Harris, predeceased her, along with her parents, Thomas and Lura (Cleary) Harris.

The family is greatly indebted to the Reverend Bill and Mrs. Sue Lamont for helping with Mae’s care after the death of her husband.   Bill served as pastor at Hidenwood Presbyterian Church for many years.

Mae was born on May 25, 1925, in Sparta, NC, and attended Glade Valley School.  As a young adult, she moved to Hampton, VA, and secured a position with NACA.  After marrying Ed, they resided in Hampton and in Newport News, VA.  She was an active and long-time member of Hidenwood Presbyterian Church, serving in the library and as a parent advisor to the youth group.  She was a very accomplished seamstress and made many outfits for herself and her daughter.  Mae was active in the Women’s Club of Newport News; she was President of the local PEO (Philanthropic Educational Organization) for several terms, served on the board of the Peninsula SPCA, and volunteered at the Peninsula Fine Arts Gallery.  She loved animals, art, and music.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Peninsula SPCA (https://peninsulaspca.org/).

Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601.
