Dolores Gross Harleman
Dolores Gross Harleman, 94, of Gloucester Point, VA died peacefully July 31st, 2023, with family members at her side. Dolores, daughter of Martin Jacob Gross and Bonnie Renn Gross, loving wife of 72 years to the late Eugene Thomas Harleman, passed away in her sleep at Riverside Hospital in Newport News, while being treated for a blood-chemistry imbalance. She was predeceased by her daughter Denise Harleman Tribble (Michael Matthew Tribble) and grandson Martin Thomas Tribble, but survived by son Thomas Gene Harleman (Jeanie Marie Robbins Harleman), daughter Donna Ann Harleman Johnson, four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter living throughout the United States, in addition to many nieces and nephews. Dolores proudly served at the Yorktown USO during WWII, and continued for many years in America’s defense establishment as a federal civil servant at U.S. Naval Weapons Station, Yorktown, VA. She steadily advanced from File Clerk to Editorial Assistant for the Ph.D.’s at the Naval Explosive Engineering Department, taking several years away from her career, intermittently, to rear three children. Raised in the Episcopal Church, she was an athletic youth in high school-playing basketball and softball, served on several occasions as Room Mother for her kids, and performed duty as Scorekeeper for her son’s Little League baseball team. A woman of uncompromising integrity, “Nana” was respected and loved by all who knew her. She enjoyed entertaining with her husband, cross-stitching and crocheting, gardening, and was an avid reader. She earnestly cared for her loved ones as a most generous and beloved matriarch. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. The family would like to thank the staff of Visiting Angels for their in-home support and care for Dolores during the last years of her life. Visitation is this Monday at Peninsula Funeral Home, Newport News, at 6-7:30pm. Burial service at Peninsula Memorial Cemetery on Tuesday will be restricted to family members.
