Martha Terrell Warburton McMurran
Martha Terrell Warburton McMurran, 93, passed away on Thursday, May 18, 2023, at the Gardens of Warwick Forest, Newport News, Virginia. She was born January 24, 1930, at the Buxton Hospital in Newport News to her late parents, John Gregory Warburton and Sarah Rhodes Warburton. She grew up in Williamsburg and attended Matthew Whaley School and graduated in 1946. Martha went to Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History in 1950. At Agnes Scott, she was active in Girl’s Field Hockey and enjoyed her time there. After graduation, she attended Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School for two years (1951-52) in New York City.
Martha returned to Williamsburg to work for Colonial Williamsburg as a secretary. She enjoyed her work and was a very proficient typist.
In 1953, she met Richard Epes McMurran, Sr. and they were married on April 24, 1955, at Bruton Parrish Church in Williamsburg. On November 2, 1956, they welcomed their son, Richard Epes McMurran, Jr., and lived in Hilton Village until 1992 and from there moved to Brandon Heights. Martha was able to live in her home until June 2017 when she moved to the Gardens at Warwick Forest. She enjoyed her time there and the staff and received excellent care. She loved all the nurses, and the family is very grateful for all of their help.
She was an avid gardener and a life-long member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Epes McMurran Sr., and her parents. She is survived by her son, Richard Epes McMurran, Jr; sister Susan Warburton Redd (Albert Miles Redd, Jr. “Buddy”); and numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be a private burial service on Saturday, June 10 with a memorial service at Hilton Presbyterian Church at 2:00 p.m. and a reception following at the James River Country Club from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m.
