Joseph “Joe” Allen Stillwell, 78, passed away quietly on Tuesday, May 23, 2023.  Joe was born December 1, 1944, in Elizabeth County, now known as Hampton, VA.  He graduated in 1963 from Warwick High School where he played both football and baseball.

After graduation, Joe signed on to play professional baseball for the Baltimore Orioles farm team.  He later retired in 2007 after working with the City of Newport News in Municipal Services.  He was a true Hampton Roads native.

Joe loved spending time outdoors, hunting, fishing, or just sitting on his deck.  But there was nothing more that he loved than spending time with family and friends telling jokes and reminiscing about fun times.  He touched many lives and will truly be missed by all that knew him.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Elizabeth Stillwell, father, Thomas Jefferson Stillwell, sister, Marian Chaltry, son, Joseph Allen Stillwell Jr., and grandson, Bradley Hicks.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 41 years, Lily Stillwell; daughter, Cindy Matheson (Ed); daughter-in-law, Kelly Stillwell; brothers, Larry Loving, Thomas “Buster” Stillwell (Beth), Keith Stillwell; stepdaughters, Rebecca Atkins, Catherine Smith, Melody Hicks (Kent); stepsons, Clifton Browning, Michael Browning (Maria); and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m., at Peninsula Funeral Home.
