David Bruce Olson
David Bruce Olson, age 78, of Newport News passed away on December 3. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years Linda King Olson and parents Col. Donald A. Olson and Mary Lange Olson. David is survived by his sons Michael Olson and Aaron Olson (Katherine), grandson Luke, and brother William Olson (Nancy).
David was born at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. As a colonel’s son, he moved frequently during childhood and spent three years in Madrid, Spain before moving to Mobile, AL, and back to Fairborn, Ohio. David was friendly, intelligent, and witty. He loved playing sports including tennis, golf, and baseball. He also enjoyed music and had the uncanny ability to name a song and the artist after hearing only a few notes.
David attended the College of William & Mary, where he met his wife, Linda. He was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity and was known for his dry sense of humor and the creative nicknames he bestowed. David was a natural scholar. He and Linda became loyal alumni, maintaining treasured friendships and attending decades of Tribe football games.
David earned his J.D. at the University of Richmond before leaving for a tour in Vietnam from 1970-1971 where he served as a Captain in the US Army and was awarded a bronze star. He also served as a contracting officer and military lawyer while stationed in Da Nang.
David spent his career serving the Newport News community as a prosecutor and eventually becoming Commonwealth’s Attorney before going into private practice. In retirement he enjoyed mastering countless crossword puzzles, watching sports, spending time with family, lunching with friends, and relaxing at Buckroe Beach.
A private service will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601.

David was an excellent attorney and friend, always prepared and direct in advocating for common sense legal outcomes. We shall miss his counsel, wit and presence. May the many good memories be of comfort to his family and friends at this time and in the years ahead.
