Ioanna Lappas Mageras

Ioanna Lappas Mageras, affectionately known as “Miss Anna” of Newport News, passed away on Friday, September 9, 2022. She was born in Karpenision, Greece where she worked as a pharmacist. She later immigrated to the United States and spent most of her life in Newport News, Virginia, devoted to her family and to her church, Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church. She was an active member of HWPS, the Philoptochos Society, the Daughters of Penelope, and the Evrytanian Association and served the church in as many capacities as possible. She spent many years operating a local family business, Sam’s Spaghetti and Steak House, with her daughter, Zena, before retiring.

Ioanna was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Sam Mageras. She is survived by her daughters, Zena Mageras of Newport News, Va., and Vicky Papakonstantinou of Asheville, NC, son-in law Chris Papakonstantinou, and four grandchildren, brother Ioannis Lappas of Karpenision, Greece, sisters-in-law, Christine Georges of Newport News, and Helen Elks, of Virginia Beach, and brothers-in law Bill Georges and Dennis Elks.

There will be a viewing from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 14, 2022. The request has been made to wear masks indoors. Family will not be present. A private funeral service will be held at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church with Reverend George Chioros officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church.
